Mythbusting the Flu!

How are you all? I hope you had a lovely weekend! We are in the midst of Summer here and as you know I just came back from a Winter Holiday.  One of the things we unfortunately experienced whilst we were away was illness; stomach flu, colds and fevers. And one of my little munchkins picked up a nasty virus since coming back too!

Illness is just a part of life, especially when you have little ones and almost guaranteed when you are travelling. However, there are things you can do to help prevent illness, even when you are travelling. And things you can do to manage it if you do get sick and hopefully help you to feel better faster.

Here are my Mum tips for keeping healthy!

  • Avoid going to really crowded places unless necessary! I hate crowds, so this is something I just try to do anyway. I know this is not really practical or possible at all times. You can’t get the flu if you don’t come into contact with it!
  • Wash your hands regularly and be practise good hygiene. This seems basic but basics are important! Help stop the virus in its tracks and most importantly from reaching you!
  • Get plenty of sleep, exercise and eat well! In other words take care of yourself! There are no guarantees you won’t still get sick, but the stronger your immune system and the healthier you are the better chance you have of fighting it off quickly or maybe even dodging it altogether.
  • If you do get the flu the above point becomes even more important. Switch out exercise for extra rest and I would also add make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Dehydration can come quickly and really adds to your suffering immensely. Give yourself a fighting chance.
  • Finally, call your Mum if you can and hopefully if she is close by I am sure she will be there in a heartbeat. Even as an adult I still always wish my Mum would step in and nurse me back to health. Something about a Mum’s touch that can’t be replaced!

  1. Great tips Jess and I have no extras…. I got the flu three times last winter – though suspect the third time was really just the second time extended….

    Am catching up on my blog reading so will hopefully hear how the holiday went. I think I’m going backwards!

  2. Anything we can do to support our immune system all year round will be helpful, decent diet, plenty of exercise, adequate sleep, etc.

    When I did pediatrics in med school I was exposed to sick kids every day. I washed my hands, as you recommend, about a zillian times a day and never caught a thing!

    I also take 1000 mg of vit c a day. I know it’s not in favor now, but I don’t care. Back in med school I told the chairman of the ped. department that I took C. She said it’s a placebo. She was sick constantly! If the only person to win two individual Nobel prizes said vit c is good, that’s enough proof for me 🙂
