Health Benefits of Almond Milk

Mocha Almond Fudge Avocado CakeHello!

How are you all? I can’t believe it is already Thursday! The weather has been so beautiful here the last few weeks. Today it is rainy and cold here! Boo.

Recently I have been drinking a lot of Almond Milk. I’ve been cutting out dairy and wheat as part of an acne elimination diet round 2, and so I’ve been drinking Almond Milk in replacement of cows milk. And I’m quite enjoying it, it has been a relatively smooth change over.

Since I’m drinking it I thought I should be aware of its Stats! It tastes good, but how good is it for me? What are the health benefits of almond milk?

You can get all sorts of almond milk these days, sweetened, unsweetened, vanilla and chocolate. So naturally the kind of almond milk you choose will change things. My guess is home made is probably the healthiest, but I have not been making my own. So one of the down sides is additives and preservatives.

I drink unsweetened almond milk, so it is low in carbohydrates and sugars, however, I imagine sweetened and flavoured almond milk isn’t as stellar in this regard. Because unsweetened almond milk is low in sugar and carbohydrates it is considered to be a good option for Diabetics and those worried about blood sugar levels.

Almonds themselves are high in protein, vitamin E, magnesium, selenium, manganese, zinc, potassium, iron, phosphorus, trytophan and calcium. Almond milk is not as beneficial as almonds themselves, as they lose some of the nutrients and fibre through processing. However, it does still contain those nutrients.

Almond milk is said to be good for heart health. It contains zero cholesterol and is low in sodium. It also contains flavonoids, which are said to help with lowering cholesterol.

Almond milk does contain calcium, however, generally it is lower in calcium than cows milk. If calcium is a concern for you, make sure you check the nutritional information and are consuming adequate amounts to meet your needs.

  1. I was disappointed when I looked at the nutrition facts of almond milk, compared to cow’s milk or almonds themselves. So I don’t consume much.

As for dairy, I consume it in moderation, but nevertheless daily.

    • You definitely have to look into it and make the best choice for you. Dairy seems to make my skin break out, so I’ve been trying out different alternatives!

  2. I haven’t tried almond milk but a close friend in my new hometown has a little boy who cannot have dairy proteins. So, he’s dairy allergic. (Apparently it’s something that might go away when he gets older.)

I’ve been able to cater for him on most occasions but haven’t attempted ‘milk’ but I’d be willing to try it!
