Fitness – fitting it in


How are you? I have been meaning to do this post for awhile, but have been struggling to fit it in, excuse the pun. No but seriously it can be hard trying to manage your time when you have little kids or a full time job or are studying or whatever. Life is busy. Time to spend on yourself for things like exercise can be scarce. So sometimes you have to get creative, prioritise and just do it in order to fit it in.

The girls started kindy this year (preschool) three days a week. This has been a huge change for me, because I was so used to having them home with me all the time. I miss them, but it is no doubts positive for all of us for them to be going to kindy, socialising and getting used to routine before school starts next year. It has also given me more time sort of to exercise. I still have Summer at home with me on their kindy days. However, it is definitely easier to exercise with one child than three.

Term one I focused on going gung ho into exercise on the three kindy days. Monday was generally a run with the stroller or an at home jump rope session during Summer’s nap. Tuesday morning was a Mums boxing class. Wednesday morning was Yoga and a long walk. The rest of the week and the weekend was a struggle. I would find the occasional time to go for a run, but largely I relied on doing as much incidental exercise as possible. I would try to walk the girls to school as frequently as possible and home from school, rather than drive on school days. On non kindy days I would try to plan active days including things like park visits, zoo trips, beach visits or swimming.

I definitely felt better about getting exercise in than I had last year where it felt impossible to carve out time. However, I still felt like I was craving a lot more on the days the girls weren’t going to kindy and I wasn’t being so successful with fitting it in. Everything in moderation though right? And I do realise how fleeting time is. The girls will only be this little once and it will flash by (it already has been flashing by). So I have tried not to worry too much, knowing that I will be able to increase it more as they all become more independent.

head standSecond term I changed things up again. Monday stayed as a run with the stroller, yoga moved days to a Tuesday and Wednesday has been a run with the stroller. With yoga changing days I have been unable to return to boxing. I have mixed feelings about this, I don’t like to be a quitter. But there were some challenges with boxing. It was farther away, which meant I had to drop the girls really fast at kindy to make the class and Summer hated the boxing classes, she hated the noise and would cry through a lot of it. And finally I felt as if I was being continuously corrected, which is totally fine with me to a point and then I just want to be left to work it out and do it on my own.

I have been better about getting in workouts on the days the girls are not in kindy. I have been doing at least one other structured workout over the four days and frequently I do two, which leaves me with 2 rest days. The workouts are a bit hit and miss and I would prefer they were a bit more planned, rather than trying to negotiate the time each week. However, definitely been a step forward!

The other positive thing that happened was for Mother’s Day I got a FitBit (basically a fancy pedometer). It has been fantastic. I am not usually one for gadgets, because they are expensive and I don’t like to get too obsessed with numbers. However, it has been really motivating in a really healthy balanced way (at least that how is feels so far). My goal has been to do 10,00 steps a day, which is achievable but takes some extra work some days. It has also been eye opening for the days I rely on ‘incidental’ movement, because there were days where I thought I had moved non stop and I really hadn’t and others where the reverse was true. I will probably do a review post soon!

So that has been my fitness these days, it is definitely not a work in progress. I definitely hope to do more and carve out more time and workout more effectively. However, I am happy with where I am at in the mean time.

    • Yes! I love doing online workouts! I used to do them a lot at night after the kids were in bed, I have been a bit burnt out on them I think! Will have to add some back in again soon! 🙂

  1. I agree, you are really doing well with all that you have to do!

    Perhaps yo can do a boxing or martial arts video at home? Also, as you doing some strength stuff for your upper body?

    I’ve always fit it in, and that includes running at 4:00 in the morning in med school, but I never had all the responsibilities that you have to face!

  2. Is that you doing a elbow stand thingy? Very impressive either way.

    I’m not doing any exercise and each day I tell myself I’ll go for a short walk… and I don’t. I know it’s just all a mindset thing at the moment and try to remind myself how much I loved exercising to music etc but just can’t get myself there.

    Your routines sound great and you are a fabulous example for those who are time-poor!
