Skipping down memory lane…

Hello,

How is everyone? I hope the week is starting off well for you all. 🙂

Today was a bit wild for me! We had some surprise visitors at nap time so of course the girls didn’t want to nap. Then we went to my sisters house to watch Mr Cheeky Monkey for 2 hrs. He also hadn’t napped. So it was an interesting two hours with three over tired toddlers.

Tonight I really wanted to get in a hardcore cardio workout because it mellows me out and takes the edge off. I had no chance of escaping to the gym. I decided to amp up my front yard workout with a skipping rope.

I want to design some fun skipping (jump rope) workouts to share with you. However, for tonight my goal was simply just to do it and keep doing it for at least 30 minutes.

I made it, but it definitely wasn’t smooth. Skipping came much more naturally to me 18 years ago. It made me wish I had never stopped skipping. It was definitely a bit stop and start and took me awhile to get into my groove. It is supposed to burn upwards of 11 calories a minute. I don’t think I was jumping well enough and consistently enough to have burnt 11 calories a minute.

Once I found my rhythm I played around with speed and direction. My mind wandered off thinking about childhood and wishing I hadn’t stopped doing all the healthy active things kids do. I didn’t “workout” but I spent every lunch time skipping, playing tag, running races or playing elastics.

What a different place the world would be if corporates went out to play for an hour, rather then shuffling food in their mouth at their desk so they can brag about not taking a break.

I will definitely be keeping up the skipping and trying to improve. Then I will start designing some workouts. However, skipping is not for the faint hearted or the weak bladdered. Definitely not something brand new mums should be doing. Go to the bathroom maybe twice before you start jumping. If you have joint problems or injuries obviously check with your Doctor. It is not a low impact activity.  I also don’t really believe you can do it anywhere. I couldn’t comfortably do it in a hotel room. You need some space and head height to swing that rope. But it is very inexpensive and portable.

Do you like to skip/ jump rope? Any tips or tricks for novices?

Lots of love,

Jess xoxoxo

  1. Ah! I hear ya about having to user the restroom a few times before jumping around haha! went for a jog the other day and the thought “maybe I should just wear a diaper during runs” may or may not have crossed my mind…
