Acne Elimination Diet- one year later!

I get a lot of hits to my posts about acne. Kind of sad really because it seems to affect so many people. I know it won’t be relevant to all my readers, but I thought I’d do an update for those interested.

A year ago I went on an acne elimination diet. You can read about it here, here and here. It was actually really effective. I was surprised, I didn’t expect it. I cut out a lot of things from my diet – wheat, meat, dairy, soy, processed foods. I shouldn’t have been surprised that it made a difference I guess.

It never completely cleared my skin 100%, but it made a noticeable difference.

One year later I have not maintained the diet and my skin is back to being not so clear. I found over time I slowly added back in different things and feel as if I am back to where I started almost. I have made some permanent changes that I have kept in place. I have pretty much cut out dairy completely. I occasionally have it in my tea or have an occasional serve of ice cream or chocolate. But that is okay with me, I never want to be crazy strict about the way I do anything.

Meat I really only eat occasionally, I find sometimes I really need meat. I have not been organised enough to get all of my protein effectively from vegetarian sources. Again, I don’t think it is a big deal. I would love to say it has all been organic, grain fed meat, but honestly it is way too expensive to eat meat that way for us at the moment.

Wheat I believe is probably my biggest issue and I’m wondering if it has one of the biggest impacts on my skin. I have completely re included it in my diet.

So the plan from here is to clean up my diet again. I’m going to read this book The Clear Skin Diet  and try to implement it’s recommendations. And just see how I go! Wheat is something I am going to try and cut. It is not radical, it is not about cutting down on the amount I eat or reducing portion sizes or anything to do with weight loss. It is about seeing what things I can do that will improve the clarity of my skin long term without constant medications and creams.

So that my friends is where I am at! Have any of you noticed major changes to any aspects of your health through diet tweaks? Any success or failures?

  1. It’s interesting that you blogged about this today. After a few years of breakouts I found a cleanser/moisturizer that I liked around November. My skin was SO much better!! They stopped making it and now my face is back to the way it was. It’s such a bummer.

    • Awesome that you found something that worked! But terrible that they stopped making it! I found some products that worked well when we lived in California and then when we moved back to Australia I couldn’t get them here. I only as recently as last year looked into dietary changes. Every Dr I’d ever seen has always told me it has nothing to do with diet!

  2. I gave up gluten last for for nearly 6 months and it helped my acne and my digestions. But life is easier not to be a pest about picky diets when I know I do not have a serious allergy. For what it is worth, the last few months my skin has been relatively clean and I have no idea what I have done! It comes and goes, I suppose.

    • Yeah life is hard when you are really picky and strict with diets. Interesting to know that it helped your acne. Sometimes my face clears or breaks out for no apparent reason too! Enjoy it, and hopefully it will last! 🙂

    • Yeah alcohol and diet coke would be biggies. I don’t drink since I’ve had kids, but I go through diet coke phases where I quit and then I end up back drinking it too frequently. I’m addicted when I’m drinking it! Definitely doesn’t help my complexion though.

  3. I cut out wheat & dairy for a while and it cleared up my eczema, which had been really bad. For a while I was trying to limit, rather than completely eliminate, but like you, I’m finding I’ve gone too far in the other direction again, especially with wheat. I’ve been noticing over the past couple of days that patches of eczema are starting to show on my hands again, so I should definitely think about cutting back, if not cutting it out completely again.

    • That is interesting that it helped with your eczema. I get eczema sometimes really badly and then not for months. I just find if I don’t cut it completely I slip back into my old eating style.

    • Yeah I haven’t gotten all the way through it yet, but I’m curious to try! I’m 29 and still struggling. I’m going to be wrinkled with pimples! haha!

  4. I cut wheat, dairy, gluten, sugar, soy, nuts, fruits, trans fat from my diet about 10 years ago and I have to say, on a constant basis I am getting compliments on my complexion! I truly believe it is because of the way that I eat and because I moisturize daily! 🙂

  5. It’s interesting that acne is become much more prevalent nowadays then before. Maybe the bacteria have mutated or it could have been all the processed food! I’ve had a dermatologist guest lecturer for my anatomy class and I had a chat with her about diet and acne. She said there’s really not enough evidence but she did suggest cutting down on dairy because of the potential link with the insulin like growth factor. Well it doesn’t hurt to just try eating cleaner 😛

    I know for me stress is a big factor with acne and so are hormones 😛

    • Stress and hormones are big for me!!! It is interesting how prevalent it is becoming and how much more common adult acne has become too (not just teens). I think for me it is worth experimenting even if the Science is there yet.

  6. A healthy diet is great for an overall health, skin included. And by eating like that you get used to this kind of healthy diet. Two goals in one! 🙂

  7. Interesting post + the comments. I went gluten and dairy free for February to see if I would lose any weight, if my acne would clear up or if I’d stop having a runny nose. I lost 2 pounds in that month but other than that I did not see any changes that made such a severe diet worth it. I was definitely disappointed! I was hoping my acne would clear up. 🙁

    • That’s a shame it didn’t clear up, but interesting none the less. It is a hard thing to cut, which is why I have let it back into my diet. We will see if it is worth it for me!

  8. I don’t have acne, but I’ve struggled with eczema (a similar skin problem) ever since I was young. Recently I started a 30-day eczema program…similar to GAPS but easier, (you’re allowed to eat carbs, red meat, etc.) and it focuses on finding out what your eczema “triggers” are. For me the biggest skin triggers are wheat in gluten, (like you) dairy and high amounts of sugar. After finishing two weeks into the program and eliminating my “triggers” my skin cleared up so well! (I also lost 4lbs as a great “side effect” 😉 ) It definitely is important to be careful as to what you put in your body!

    I never found that red meat was a problem for me…although I know that it could definitely be an issue if you have high levels of uric acid. Have you gotten your levels checked? High uric acid can also be from foods like sugar, alcohol or a lack of vitamins and fibers…if you were to cut down on high sugar and get a good intake of vitamins for example and eat red meat, I don’t think it should cause harmful skin effects 🙂

    • That is really interesting. I have since re-introduced meat and have not been having issues with it. I have been more picky about the quality though, which I’m sure makes a difference. I’ll have to check out your site!
